Did you know, November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month? I often wonder if it is a coincidence that this dreaded disease which affects one in two Americans over the age of 85 is highlighted during the same month as our national holiday Thanksgiving. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, well below the leaders of heart disease, cancer and stroke. Yet this disease seems to be the most feared simply because there is no cure for its manifestations, which include dementia.
So, as the holidays quickly approach and you gather with your loved ones to share in the celebration of all that we are thankful for, remember to give thanks to the caregivers in your life. The devoted family members who give the extra time, energy and courtesies to our aging loved ones, the ones who give of themselves unconditionally. The holidays are the perfect opportunity for the children, siblings and other family members to be aware of the growing needs of our aging loved ones.
Here are 10 warning signs for early detection from The Alzheimer’s Association
- Memory changes that disrupt daily life–sometimes forgetting names or appointments but remembering them later.
- Challenges in planning or solving problems–difficulty in following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills.
- Difficulty performing familiar tasks at home, work or leisure–forgetting their way home from the store, confusion with remote controls or microwave settings.
- Confusion with time or place – can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time.
- Trouble understanding visual images – they may not recognize their own image in the mirror thinking someone else is in the room.
- New problems with words in speaking or writing–sometimes having trouble finding the right word or calling things by the wrong one.
- Misplacing things or losing the ability to trace their steps – continually misplacing glasses or remotes and sometimes accusing others of stealing.
- Decreased or poor judgment – they may mishandle money or pay less attention to grooming themselves.
- Withdrawal from work or social activities – starting to remove themselves from hobbies or social gatherings.
- Changes in mood or personality – developing very specific ways of doing things or becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted.
Finding out that a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful, frightening and overwhelming. As a caregiver you must remember to take care of yourself first, stay healthy and strong. Get the support and assistance you will require to maintain a healthy environment for you as well as your loved ones. It is so important not to become burned out from being a caregiver. By getting the right support and assistance you need, whether from a professional service, friend or neighbor, allows you down time, time to take a stroll, go to the movies, out to lunch with a friend.
Whatever brings you peace, relaxation and enjoyment will also benefit your aging loved one. During the upcoming holidays, take a good close look at your aging loved ones and their environment. Are they safe and are their needs being met? Do they need additional assistance, and, if so, how do we go about finding the best solutions and resources? Please keep in mind that we do not want to take our loved one’s dignity away, but empower them with a sense of security through the care we provide for them.
So, let’s remember to give thanks this holiday season to our loved ones and caregivers young and old.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

In-home care has come a long way in recent years. Seniors living at home are able to hold on to the feeling of independence while having the help they need with every day life. Being in familiar surroundings can be therapeutic in so many ways. Often the caregivers are family members at first, but before long, a new level of help may be needed. If your loved one needs or soon will need extra help, what are your options?

The leaves are falling, the wind is howling, the air has a bone chilling dampness – are your aging loved ones safe in their environment? Stop by and bring them some cider or fresh baked pumpkin bread and take a peek at their surroundings.
- Is their driveway and walkways clear from wet slippery leaves?
- Is water collecting on slippery surfaces?
- Are their hand railings and are they securely installed?
- When was their furnace last serviced?
- Are their windows easy to open and close?
- Do they use or need a cane or walker – something to think about?
- Are their sweaters, jackets and throws in a convenient place?
- Open up their frig – is there any foul odors, check expiration dates.
Keeping your loved ones safe brings comfort and warms hearts! Happy Autumn!!!

It’s a tough line to tow when you start to see the red flags and symptoms of Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other related diseases while spending time with your loved one. Should I approach the topic? How do I approach the topic? And when is the right time to open the conversation up with your loved one?
Well, it’s seems most of us wait until those red flags turn into red flashing strobe lights with sirens! Now you feel pressed for coming up with alternative life changing choices. You are now in Crisis Mode! You are now faced with making quick decisions and adding enormous amounts of stresses to your own life. OK, let’s rewind.
You’re visiting with your loved one, you notice their forgetfulness window has narrowed and they are repeating themselves several times within the hour or they are becoming easily agitated over what they previously did not give a second thought to. Now is the time to calmly and unconfrontationally say; I think it’s time for your annual visit to Dr. GP, let me go ahead and give them a call and see when we can get you in there, I’ll try and set it up for late morning so that after, we can go out for lunch and have a little fun time together. Leave it at that, no need to explain your thoughts. Keep it simple!
When you set up the appointment, make sure you either ask to speak with your loved ones doctor or a nurse so that they are well aware of your concerns and the reason for the appointment. Also, discuss with them beforehand that you feel they may want to suggest a referral for a neurologist for further examination of your loved ones progression. Your main objective is to get a accurate diagnosis, to enable your loved one to receive proper treatment and track the progression from a reasonable starting point. These few simple steps you take before the flashing red strobe lights with sirens appear, will make the inevitable transitions of everyone’s lives smoother and easier to manage.

When is the right time to get assistance and plan long-term care for your Senior Loved One?! So many of us ask this question.
Well, as I spoke of previously in my first blog “Don’t Wait for a Crisis to Happen,” be aware, make a plan. If a crisis happens first, your choices for long-term care are narrowed significantly. So, what are some of the signs, red flags, concerns, worries… ? Be aware of the little things that start happening:
Has your loved one started to:
- forget appointments, pay bills.
- forget eating at least three meals a day.
- leave the stove or iron on.
- forget to take their medications.
- fall more frequently.
These are just a few things, the list goes on and on. Every one of us has individualized cares and needs. The key is to be AWARE of changes in behaviors and daily patterns. If something triggers a worry in you as their child or caregiver, then reach out and ask for advise or assistance. There are so many wonderful long-term care resources out there for us to grab hold of. We, the children or caregivers need to reach out to others, it is a very overwhelming period in our lives. Do Not be afraid to ask for Help! We Can Help, call or email your concerns today! www.aseniorschoiceonline.com
Let us help put your worries to rest!
