When it comes to our elders, parents or to a loved one’s safety, wellbeing and quality of life, there are many subjects I wish to share with my readers.
For instance, how many steps does it take to safe guard our elders against harm’s way and mishaps? What should we be looking for and exactly who is in charge of the monitoring?
To name a few elder wellbeing topics that most families take for granted until it is suddenly thrown into their laps, or so it seems, are: weather, driving, spending patterns, fraud and the cost of assistance and or care. Some elders need to make more than one transition for higher levels of care depending on a multitude of circumstances, for instance their home environment, their diagnosis, their medications and the affect it has on them, their mental and physical state. Below, I’ll be asking you a series of questions which you will most likely be able to answer without hesitation. Continue reading “And We’re Off: The Race to Secure the Wellbeing of Our Elders”
Sending flowers, candy and greeting cards are the norm for mom on Mother’s Day, but as a member of the baby boomer generation, we recognize that what your aging mother really wants on her special day is to feel nurtured.
Sandwiched boomers recognize that aging is a natural progression and a normal part of the life cycle. But just as it is difficult to accept your own aging, when you witness your mother regressing, the facts of life provide scant comfort. Acknowledging your mother’s decline in well-being becomes the first step in your plans for realistic long-term care for her. Research shows that money, title or good health has less effect on life satisfaction than strong personal relationships can. So this Mother’s Day, make a commitment to do what you can to improve your relationship and give your mom and yourself positive memories. Continue reading “Nurturing Your Mom on Mother’s Day”
Did you know there is a link between music and memory when it comes to dementia? How would you feel if your loved one, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, began tapping their feet, swaying, humming or singing, recalling memories and feelings of love, happiness or a sense of warmth and comfort? Well, I was overjoyed when I saw a video of just how effective an iPod can be with Alzheimer’s patients. Have you thought of providing your elder relative with a way to listen to his or her favorite music? We take for granted how much of a positive effect music has on our lives.

It’s warming up in Upstate New York! With projected temperatures reaching 91 today, it’s time to start paying attention to a new set of risks that come with heat and humidity.
The CDC estimates around 300 people die every year from heat related ailments. It’s very important to make sure our senior family members are staying hydrated, and avoiding suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion. After all, this is the time of year to be out enjoying the sunshine—and important, mood-lifting activity for seniors.
We’re all aware of a push across many levels to “go local”—shop locally, buy locally source products, eat local. In many ways, the payback is community pride, cycling business back into local business, and economic growth. In many ways, there’s a feeling of trust: that we share a community, and its interests, and a familiarity with where we live that makes us understand one another and work toward common goals.
To potential clients searching for help with elder care options, finding an assisted living facility, or simply a shoulder to lean on who can offer the best of advice, A Senior’s Choice offers something unique: the local advantage. Continue reading “A Senior’s Choice: The local difference”

Fortunately, the wonderful care Ruth hasbeen receiving at the Memory Care Community you assisted us in finding is mostgratifying, it has already been over a year since she became a resident there.
Your involvement in this industry is extremely needed. From the time we metyou at our home, you were professional, caring, and extremely comforting. We were fortunate to have you recommended to us by our good friend and neighbor. You took our information and went to work in finding a suitableresidence for my sister. You followed through in every aspect and made ourdecision easy for us. Your services are very much needed with families today.
Should a prospective client want to contact us directly, we ‘d be happy to speak with them and share our story!
From the moment I first spoke with Clare, I knew she was sent from above. I immediately began referring to her as “my Saint Clare”!
I have always been the “doer” in every aspect of my personal and professional life. Instantly Clare made me feel as if I had the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders, when she said to me, “Let me do that for you!” She made me feel as if I had a personal assistant at my side.
I thought I was a responsive person, but Clare blew me away…every phone call, every email, was answered practically instantly!
At a time where the road seemed so dark, Clare was my beacon, and to this day, I thank her all the time for guiding me in giving my mother the best, most perfect living arrangements anyone could have wished for.
The time had come for me to make a decision about long-term care for my aunt, as she was no longer able to live on her own. A friend suggested I call Clare Colamaria at A Senior’s Choice as I didn’t know what to do.
I met with Clare, and with her help and expertise, we determined the level of care my aunt needed. Clare discussed all aspects of senior care and what different facilities provided. Clare then called facilities on my behalf and was able to find an appropriate residence for my aunt in less than one week! This was a tremendous relief and gave me and my family great peace of mind.
I highly recommend A Senior’s Choice services, Clare and her staff are dedicated, professional and fully understand how delicate transitioning is for elders while insuring a smooth transition is possible.
Thank you so much with your help in ultimately finding afacility for my mom. Had it not been foryour efforts and knowledge of the system, I would still be trudging all overlooking for a place. One thing I havelearned going forward, is how difficult the process really is. You’ve taken a complicated and stressful situation and simplified it… I thank you.
“A Senior’s Choice” is a service that is definitely needed in this area.
